Following Preston's return to Australia from England in 1919, Margaret and her husband William Preston settled in Borogegal and Cammeraigal Country/Mosman. The move proved to be a dominant influence of her artistic development, providing her with proximity to natural environments and views to the harbour and the city which featured in many of her prints in the 1920s. Printed on thin Japanese paper, The boat, Sydney Harbour was hand-coloured with the artist following the example of seventeenth-century Japanese printmaker Maronobu. It was while living in Mosman that Preston's reputation as a key figure in the Australian artistic community became firmly established.
