From the earliest days the mandate of the National Gallery was broad-art of the twentieth century on a worldwide basis-and Bridget Riley's Gamelan was one of the first international works to enter the collection. The title refers to the traditional Indonesian percussion orchestra and the array of instruments it contains. The bars of colour, and their evocation of the instruments in the gamelan ensemble, reinforce the analogy between sound and the colour-induced rhythms across the composition. The viewer, in front of this work, perceives a subtle bowing effect.
