In 1862 Eugene von Guérard journeyed to the Mount Kosciuszko region with a party led by the German scientist George Neumayer, who was conducting a survey of Victoria. In this work, von Guérard combines topographical accuracy with a sense of wonder at the grandeur of the landscape and the power of natural forces. Neumayer and his assistant are shown in the foreground taking barometric readings to determine the height of the mountain. The peak held great spiritual significance for the Ngarigo people, who visited annually to collect bogong moths.
