Primer vuelo con éxito del Wright Flyer, realizado por los hermanos Wright. La máquina recorrió 36,6 m en 12 segundos a las 10:35 de la mañana del 17 de diciembre de 1903 en Kitty Hawk, Carolina del Norte.
En la imagen Orville Wright esta a los mandos de la máquina, tumbado en la parte inferior del ala y con las caderas en la cuna desde donde accionaba el mecanismo de deformación del ala. Wilbur Wright corre a su lado para equilibrar la máquina, y acaba de soltar su agarre en el montante delantero del ala derecho.
Detrás de la máquina pueden verse el carril de arranque, el reposa-alas, una caja de bobinas y otros elementos necesarios para la preparación del vuelo.
La Fédération Aéronautique Internationale lo consideró como "el primer vuelo sostenido y controlado de un aparato más pesado que el aire".
First successful flight of the Wright Flyer, built by the Wright brothers. The machine traveled 36.6 meters in 12 seconds at 10:35 a.m. on December 17, 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.
In the picture, Orville Wright is at the controls of the machine, lying on the underside of the wing with his hips in the cradle from which he operated the wing deformation mechanism. Wilbur Wright is running beside him to balance the machine and has just released his grip on the front right wing strut.
Behind the machine are the starter rail, wing rest, spool box, and other items needed for flight preparation.
The Fédération Aéronautique Internationale considered it "the first sustained and controlled flight of a heavier-than-air apparatus".
