As Intended

While the practice of running hood unit locomotives "long hood forward" is most famously associated with the Southern Railway, all of Canadian National's London-built GP9 diesels were also configured to operate long hood forward upon their delivery in the late 1950's. The same was true of virtually all of CN's early hood units. Many - but not all - of the GP9s were converted to run short hood forward over the next several decades. Now, as the roster of GP9s dwindles on Canadian National, there are even fewer in existence that are still set up to run this way. CN 7071 is one of these units, and on this particular day it was positioned to lead L583 east out of London along with two other GM products. A darkened sky acts as a backdrop as rain moves in from the west.
