Colourful male blue-and-yellow tanager—Naranjero (Explored 28: 27 Aug 2025)

As Spring approaches in the Southern hemisphere, many cute small visitors come to my backyard these days. Today, I share two pictures of a couple of cute Naranjeros, showing in this picture the colourful male.

The blue-and-yellow tanager (Rauenia bonariensis) is a species of bird in the tanager family Thraupidae. Known in Spanish by several names: "tangara naranjera" or "naranjero", "tangara azul y amarilla" (in Perú) or "tangara azuliamarilla" (in Ecuador).

The male is identified by its blue head and wings, blackish or greenish back, and yellow underparts and rump; females are less colourful than males but show the same general pattern.
