Quora Q&A
As a student of theology, is it possible to study psychology? Yes.
Religion & science go hand & hand.
Prophets had knowledge, wisdom & knew psychology before it had the title “psychology” & before there were “psychiatrists.”
They knew human behavior & how to deal with people on all levels.
Example, (Muhammad & his companions were giving out the obligatory charity to the people, one man came with something similar to a trunk & started filling it till the gold & silver was spilling over.)
(Then the man asked for help to carry it. Muhammad told everyone around not to help him carry it. They all stood there & watched while he tried to carry it himself & couldn’t, so he had to take some out, still couldn’t carry it, this happened a few times till he was able to carry it away.)(Bukhari)
Why did he tell the people not to help?
Without even knowing the man personally, he saw the personality of the man & using psychology & wisdom, he knew how to deal with the man.
He was greedy.
The obligatory charity goes to all the people of a town or country, that’s a lot of people to give out too.
But this man was taking & taking & taking, greed, selfish, inconsiderate, impatient, etc. & other disorders, I feel, maybe a narcissistic, because of the boldness to not just take so much, but then insensitive enough to ask the other poor people to help him carry it.
But notice, Muhammad did not deal with him harshly, he let the man have the chance to discover his own greed & learn a lesson.
Much like psychiatrists & therapists do, they constantly respond to what the patient said, with: “what do you think it means?” or “how does that make you feel?” etc.
Because that is how one helps another grow & improve. Having them look into a mirror.
Jesus, the son of Virgin Mary, used psychology to deal with the people who wanted to harm him.
In many verses, depending on the version of the Bible one reads/uses, Jesus answered the people many times when asked was he Elijah, was he the Messiah or that Prophet, for they were expecting 3 prophecies that were not fulfilled yet, but because he knew the mentality of the people asking, and that they had killed John the Baptist, using psychology, he responded with: “who do you say I am?”
So psychology, science & what The Creator has sent through Prophets & Books, all go together, for whom do people think they get the knowledge from?
One can’t have science without the universe & what’s it it, it didn’t get here by itself, so Whomever/whatever created the universe, also placed in it things for people to discover & study.
And without the humans, animals, sea life & all life to study, there would be no psychology for there would be no behavior to study.
Something to think about.
