Slide 10: Combination works and Metaphysical Doubles

My intent in this work ‘Metaphysical Doubles’ (‘Metaphysical Doubles’ references doubles of ‘Self’ characters) is to combine all the aspects of ‘The Self’ insofar as I am able to express. I realised that colour palettes actually act as a double for my works, so I decided to combine the two, colour palettes and the actual figurative works together in one work. In ‘Metaphysical Doubles’, using layering over a large colour palette, I copied two monotone Assyrian figures from an older Vanitas work onto acetate. I faced them opposite each other so as to establish the two Assyrian figures as central to the work and painted over them. I added other cutouts to the work, for example the skull in the top left of the work. Through further artist research, I learnt about Max Ernst and ‘Automatic Drawing’, consistent with visual ‘stream of consciousness’ exploration (see Slide 5: ‘Stream of Consciousness’: Visual images). With this in mind, I drew images that came to mind; rapidly creating wings, hints of angels and many eyes - to me these were metaphysical images. I wanted to create a vivid and unusual painting, while still retaining the integrity of ‘The Double’ and ‘Vanitas’ themes. I learnt that introducing abstract and figurative elements in the same work created a tension, and its own torrid emotion and explosion. The work appears crowded reflecting a further tension between planning the work and spontaneous response to the work itself as it developed. This is also a criticism of the work. I would like to develop the work on a much larger scale (moving from A2 to A1) and plan further, and consider more specific narratives and refinement (see Slide 11: The Double - Inner World and Outer World Experiments for ‘Remembrance’ and Slide 12: Spiritual Symbolism: Remembrance).
