Northrop YF17 Prototype painted as a bogus CF-18L
Northrop YF17 COBRA: Canada liked it but did not want the soft 'air force 'landing gear and to have Northrop build it. So McDonnell Douglas was selected to build the New Fighter Aircraft as the F-18. It also lost to the F16 and Tornado in the ISAF competition.
The CF-18L Prototype was designated by Northrop, no such designation existed in the Canadian Air Force.
The picture was taken during the YF17 Canada tour back in 1978.
