Twentynine Palms California Smoketree Building mural panorama 2023 1

In the east, the Morongo Basin goes from bone-dry Wonder Valley (which seems to be called "Wonder Lake" by real estate boosters) to Yucca Valley on the west end. Yucca Valley is the big metropolis sporting a WalMart, a Home Depot, and a sales tax. The main road through the Morongo Basin is State Route 62 (SR62). The entire basin is a distance of about 45 driving miles from the salt plant in the east to west. I drive up and down SR62 often because the nearby grocery store is out of something or I have business in Yucca Valley area. Locals like to say, "It's about eight degrees cooler than Palm Springs."

Everybody has their local visual noise: the stuff you pass by every day but no longer notice. Twentynine Palms 'gots' murals. A bunch of them, in fact. One portrays US Marines returning from Operation Desert Storm. Several imagine scenes with area european homesteader families. This one is a giant portrait of our friend the Desert Iguana. Thankfully, the ones in my yard aren't this big. (Clever girl!)

If there are Iguanas in your yard, you need a broom. They like to relieve themselves on the driveway and walks. Fortunately, you and I don't follow this custom.

There is a lot of public art in the Morongo Basin. Consequently, as you might expect, there are also artists. There are galleries and exhibits. None of these organizations seems to have money yet murals get painted and sculptures get welded. Thankfully.

…what keeps you going is the thrill of experiment and expectation. …You live on hope: that next picture.

…The only way you can feel whether a figure is operating in a space — rather than attached to the edges — is to see whether you can get the damn thing to operate in the space and to locate itself.

…If you try to find an edge in a Vermeer — on an arm or anything — you just cannot find it. …He's invented — in a sense — a whole 'nother kind of reality. It's a frozen moment in eternal time. How in the world did that come about? It's astonishing.

…The movements in the picture need to be there. The sequence of light needs to be considered. Have you included various kinds of light? Have you included lets say glints, glean, glow so that the light is like the life of light in it's range? If it doesn't have a lot of this visual experience, then we run the risk of boring people.
