Calipatria California pole line 2023 04

I was impressed with the height of this pole line and wonder how the poles were transported out here. It's mostly open space but the poles look to be possibly 80 feet or more. Open data released by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission says the top high voltage lines on this pole may be 192,000 volts. Public information suggests that's the highest voltage in Imperial Irrigation District's transmission lines.

As always, your expertise and corrections are welcomed.

Using a map, I measured the section of the road where the pole line parallels the road. The map says the section of pole line in the photo is almost exactly 6 miles long, (compressed by the long lens.) I didn't measure the span, the distance between poles. I'm getting some distortion because it was about 100 degrees F (37.3 degrees C) out there yesterday and air movement is distorting some things in the photo. That's why the yellow "Trucks Turning" sign looks blurry.

There are many rules covering how utility poles are installed. Part of the focus is on industrial safety. People need to climb the poles without risking their lives either from falls or by coming in contact with energized hardware. Lines aren't supposed to fall on some yahoo with a camera walking under them.

I think these poles need to be 22 inches in diameter. As nearly as I can tell, these poles are required to have ten feet of the pole in the ground. As poles get shorter, more of the pole needs to be in the ground and they don't need to be as big in diameter. Shorter poles may need up to a quarter of their length in the soil.

On systems where specifications are available, the highest voltages go at the top where they're furthest from the public. Signaling like fiber, internet, and twisted pair telephone (called TDM), are closest to the ground. Safety features are supposed to prevent telephone and internet lines from becoming energized with power. It's a good thing, too.
