Barstow California FRA Track Gage Test 2022 03

This set of cars is identified as a US DOT Federal Railroad Administration track gage testing train. The generator set, and possibly the air conditioning, had been left 'on' while parked at AmTrak Barstow station in California. They may have been crunching collected data or protecting their expensive stuff from the desert heat.

This is a lab on wheels. There are many sensors including some hanging a few inches above the rails. The five devices above the car roof, (in the foreground), are made by industrial automation company, Sick. I used to work with people who could design these kinds of sensor arrays and the software that analyze data from them. I'll bet the staff who analyze these data sets would be interesting in a different way than a locomotive engineer.

I don't know much about modern locomotives and rolling stock. Your lessons, and your corrections, are welcomed.

The Government has carefully counted, classified, and computer-taped all of the outrages which it does so little about.
