THE OLD HAA MUSEUM Island of Yell in Shetland #148 Explore December 18, 2025 .
The ‘Old Haa of Brough’, was built by Robert Tyrie, a local merchant. He completed the building in 1672, and it went on to become the home of various merchants and Hanseatic Traders. The Old Haa Trust, formed in 1984, acquired the building from the Shetland Amenity Trust, with the proviso that they would “look after the building on behalf of the people of Yell.”
With this in mind, extensive repairs took place and the Old Haa was opened as a museum. The Trust later purchased the Smiddy next door, which was incorporated into the museum, and which now houses the Gift Shop and Gallery. The building is unique and was listed on 13 August 1971 as a building of local significance in Shetland, with its defining arches proudly curving towards the main road in front of the museum.

Le « Old Haa of Brough » a été construit par Robert Tyrie, un commerçant local. Il a achevé le bâtiment en 1672 et il est devenu la résidence de divers marchands et commerçants hanséatiques.
Le Old Haa Trust, créé en 1984, a acquis le bâtiment du Shetland Amenity Trust, à condition qu'il « s'occupe du bâtiment au nom des habitants de Yell ».
C'est dans cet esprit que d'importantes réparations ont eu lieu et que le Vieux Haa a été ouvert en tant que musée. Le Trust a ensuite acheté le Smiddy voisin, qui a été intégré au musée et qui abrite désormais la boutique de cadeaux et la galerie. Le bâtiment est unique et a été classé le 13 août 1971 comme bâtiment d'importance locale aux Shetland, avec ses arches déterminantes se courbant fièrement vers la route principale devant le musée.
