UN SOIR A BRUXELLES - ONE EVENING IN BRUSSELS
Le port de Bruxelles arrivait jadis vraiment jusqu’au cœur de la ville. Un pont tournant séparait le Bassin des Barques du Bassin des Marchands. C’est sur ces longs quais que les affaires se faisaient et que l’animation battait son plein. Le lieu, traditionnellement associé à la vente de poissons, se situe près de l’actuelle Église Sainte-Catherine. Un marché appelé le « Vismet » y fut actif de 1884 à 1955. Aujourd’hui encore, le Quai au Bois à Brûler et le Quai aux Briques, qui entourent le Marché aux Poissons, témoignent d’une riche activité économique, alimentaire et gastronomique. Les activités portuaires ont existé à cet endroit jusqu’au début du XXe siècle puis les bassins ont été comblés. L’Église Sainte-Catherine a, quant à elle, été édifiée à l’emplacement du Bassin Sainte-Catherine, entre 1854 et 1874. De nos jours, il ne s'y tient plus de marché aux poissons mais depuis des décennies l'endroit est le haut-lieu des restaurants à poisson et crustacés de la capitale.
The Port of Brussels once reached right into the heart of the city. A swing bridge separated the Bassin des Barques from the Bassin des Marchands. It was on these long quays that business was conducted and the scene of activity was at its height. The area, traditionally associated with the sale of fish, is located near the current Sainte-Catherine Church. A market called the "Vismet" was active there from 1884 to 1955.
Even today, the Quai au Bois à Brûler and the Quai aux Briques, which surround the Fish Market, bear witness to a rich economic, food, and gastronomic activity. Port activities existed here until the early 20th century, when the docks were filled in. The Church of Saint Catherine was built on the site of the Bassin Sainte Catherine between 1854 and 1874. Today, a fish market is no longer held there, but for decades the place has been the capital's hotspot for fish and shellfish restaurants.
