Nel bacino d'acqua che si forma ai piedi della grande cascata, è stato inserito il gruppo scultoreo di Diana e Atteone realizzato tra il 1786 e il 1789. E’ Ovidio con le sue celebri “Metamorfosi”, ad offrire lo spunto per la rappresentazione del mito di Diana e Atteone. Secondo la storia raccontata nella mitologia classica, Atteone, giovane cacciatore, sorprende la dea Diana mentre fa il bagno: la divinità in un moto di rabbia trasforma Atteone in un cervo. Il giovane fu sbranato dai suoi stessi cani da caccia, che non lo riconobbero. La fontana presente alla Reggia di Caserta immortala in due gruppi il racconto: da una parte, le ninfe, sconvolte dalla rabbia della dea, scappano e si tuffano in acqua mentre dalla parte opposta, il giovane cacciatore è ritratto mentre si sta tramutando in cervo ed è attorniato da cani.

The sculpture group of Diana and Actaeon, created between 1786 and 1789, was placed in the basin of water that forms at the foot of the large waterfall. It was Ovid with his famous "Metamorphoses" who provided the inspiration for the representation of the myth of Diana and Actaeon. According to the story told in classical mythology, Actaeon, a young hunter, surprises the goddess Diana while she is bathing: the divinity, in a fit of rage, transforms Actaeon into a deer. The young man was torn to pieces by his own hunting dogs, who did not recognize him. The fountain at the Royal Palace of Caserta immortalizes the story in two groups: on one side, the nymphs, shocked by the goddess's anger, run away and dive into the water while on the opposite side, the young hunter is portrayed while he is transforming into a deer and is surrounded by dogs.
