CASTELLO DI MIRAMAR - CASTLE OF MIRAMAR
TRIESTE
A few days ago I published the photo of the statue of Maximilian of Austria Emperor of Mexico. This is Miramar Castle which was built between 1856 and 1860 to a design by the Viennese architect Karl Junker at the behest of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg. It was little used by the latter due to the unfortunate fate that history reserved for it. Maximilian, brother of Emperor Franz Joseph, together with his consort Carlotta Princess of Belgium, daughter of King Leopold I of Belgium, entered the castle on Christmas Eve 1860 after having lived for two years in the castle, a smaller residence within the inside the vast park of the castle. At that time Massimiliano held the position of Governor of Lombardy-Veneto so he did not frequently stay in the castle. In 1861 he left for a long journey to Brazil and in 1864 he sailed to Mexico where he was crowned Emperor and where on June 19, 1867 he was assassinated at the age of 35, brutally tortured and then shot by a platoon under the command of Benito Juarez . Maximilian was then brought back to Trieste the following year and from here he was taken to Vienna to be buried in the Capuchin Crypt where the members of the imperial family who passed away rest.
The first great legend that envelops the Castle of Miramar in mystery has it that the spirit of Maximilian never left Trieste and that his ghost usually wanders around the large park of the castle every night, not having been able to enjoy it while alive, admiring the infinite plant species imported from all over the world.
Qualche giorno fa' ho pubblicato la foto della statua di Massimiliano d’Austria Imperatore del Messico. Questo è il Castello di Miramar che fu costruito tra il 1856 ed il 1860 su progetto dell’architetto viennese Karl Junker per volere dell’Arciduca Massimiliano d’Asburgo . Fu da quest’ultimo poco utilizzato per l’infausto destino che la storia gli riservò. Massimiliano, fratello dell’Imperatore Francesco Giuseppe, assieme alla consorte Carlotta Principessa del Belgio, figlia di Leopoldo I re del Belgio, entrarono nel castello il giorno della vigilia di Natale del 1860 dopo aver dimorato per due anni nel castelletto, una residenza più piccola all’interno del vasto parco del castello. In quel tempo Massimiliano ricopriva la carica di Governatore del Lombardo-Veneto quindi non dimorava frequentemente nel castello. Nel 1861 partì per un lungo viaggio in Brasile e nel 1864 salpò alla volta del Messico dove fu incoronato Imperatore e dove il 19 giugno del 1867 fu assassinato all’età di 35 anni, barbaramente torturato e poi fucilato da un plotone al comando di Benito Juarez. Massimiliano fu quindi riportato a Trieste l’anno successivo e da qui fu condotto a Vienna per essere sepolto nella Cripta dei Cappuccini dove riposano i membri della famiglia imperiale passati a miglior vita.
La prima grande leggenda che avvolge di mistero il Castello di Miramar vuole che lo spirito di Massimiliano non abbia mai lasciato Trieste e che il suo fantasma sia solito aggirarsi ogni notte nel grande parco del castello, non avendone potuto godere in vita, a rimirare le infinite specie di piante importate da ogni parte del mondo.
