This picture was taken in +2/3 EV. When increasing the EV the image became too bright and lost a lot of detail in the texture of the rocks. Also you lose the shadowing of the bigger rocks next to them resulting in losing depth in the image. The Decreasing of the EV can result in losing the highlights from the rocks and making the picture look less vibrant.
As for the artist, i found Hiroshi Sugimoto's work (colors of shadow) surreal. The clearness of the walls and the smoothness of the shadows make the image look like it was done by computer generating it.
