Barringer Meteor Crater AZ August 2024

Almost a mile in diameter, Arizona's Barringer Meteor Crater is apparently the most complete example of a meteor crater anywhere. We had previously visited here in 2008, but decided to return again this year with children in tow.

Only a few miles from I-40, visiting the crater is curiously billed as somewhere between both a novelty roadside attraction and a serious museum. We didn't participate in a 45 minute guide tour this time, but including time for a drink and the obligatory gift shop visit, were here for around 2 hours.

The Barringer Meteor Crater is certainly an interesting sight, but whether the $98 entrance fee for a family of 4 is good value will be down to individual choice - especially when considering the pretty inevitable purchase of refreshments or gift shop items on top.

To my mind, this does not compare well with the many natural wonders of the area which can be visited for free, or the excellent value of an $80 annual pass valid in all US National Parks.
