DUNNOTTAR CASTLE - SCOTLAND 2022
Dunnottar Castle is the ruin of a medieval fortress located at the foot of a mountain on the north east coast of Scotland about 3 km south of Stonehaven . It is from the 13th century . Dunnotar played a central role in Scottish history from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment . It is private but open to the public. Hundreds of thousands of tourists visit it every year.
The fortress ruins are spread over 1.2 hectares and are almost completely surrounded by steep cliffs down to the North Sea 50 meters down. The fortress can be reached along a narrow strip of land from the mainland and to a steep path to the gatehouse. The rock formations and headland, which stretches several km to the north and south, are home to thousands of seabirds and are one of the most significant bird reserves in Europe with population and species. The 1990 film Hamlet with Mel Gibson and Glenn Close was partly shot in the area around Dunnotar.
