Footpath with a difference

Taken for the Saturday Self Challenge 'Travel"

The coastal path around the southern part of St Mary's crosses the tip of the islands runway and is controlled by a traffic light to warn pedestrians of incoming and outgoing flights.

The islands transport links to the mainland are quite vulnerable. The Skybus flights as shown here are one of three commercial methods of getting to the island. This plane is an Islander and is actually now used for freight. They also operate Twin Otters which carry 15 passengers. There is a helicopter service but the cost is prohibitive for many. Both services can be badly effected by fog. A passenger ship The Scillonian 111 operates from April until the end of October. Many users will testify to the fact that it can be very uncomfortable in rough seas.
