Why is the metaverse so sought after?
Roblox, the "first stock of the meta-universe", has more than 43 million users and a market capitalization of up to $50 billion after listing; Axie Infinity, the new generation of chain games in the crypto market, has conquered the Southeast Asian market, with more than one million daily active users, and its Token has risen 400 times in a few months, triggering a boom in the chain game meta-universe.
The popularity of the concept of meta-universe has also made a number of Internet manufacturers start to be red-eyed and have entered the game. Facebook founder Zuckerberg said that he would build his company into a meta-universe company within five years and launch a VR social platform "Horizon"; Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also said that the company is building an enterprise metacosm; Tencent continues to develop open-world games; ByteDance's high-priced acquisition of VR manufacturer Pico, investing in the online meta-universe game "Restart the world."
The ultimate goal of the metaverse is to build a virtual world that can fully simulate the real world, covering a very large number of application areas, providing a user experience that is difficult to provide in the real world (such as returning the user to the dinosaur world, etc.); so the metacosm is actually a ascending space, and the ascended dimensional space can provide great potential, thereby creating great value. But at this stage, the metaverse is still in a very basic stage, the existing metaverse application is not mature enough, and the various typical applications are still very fragmented, and it is difficult to provide an overall virtual world experience, so now the major giants' investment in the metaverse is more future-oriented.
In addition to the actual economic benefits, the metacosm also has social significance. Professor Cai Wei summarized the social significance of four aspects, namely: accessibility, diversity, equality and humanity. For example, in the metaverse, people interact with other people in their own definition of avatars, without discrimination such as race, color, gender, disability, and poverty.
In addition, the development of multimedia technology (VR/AR, etc.) alone cannot solve all the problems in the development of metaspace, because multimedia technology cannot guarantee the transparency, stability and sustainability of the digital economy, which is precisely the specialty of blockchain. For example, the current digital economy is built by centralized operators (such as large companies), which means that digital property actually belongs to operators, not users; and blockchain, especially decentralized finance (DeFi), is the technology that builds decentralized systems and makes digital assets truly belong to users.
In Metaverse for Social Good: A University Campus Prototype, a three-tier metacosmonic architecture is proposed from a macroscopic perspective, including infrastructure, interactions, and ecosystems, and seven characteristics of the metaverse are summarized: blockchain, VR/AR, digital twins, user content generators, UGC, economics, and artificial intelligence.
Based on the above framework, the University of Chinese (Shenzhen) of Hong Kong conducted a landing exploration, adopted the alliance chain FISCO-BCOS as the underlying blockchain architecture, and established the first campus metaverse model - CUHKSZ Metaverse.
