Salt ‘pans’, which artisanal miners use via evaporation to get salt from Lake Katwe in Kasese district. Over 10,000 artisanal miners work at the site, some dredging rock salt from the lakes bottom, while others use crystallization in the ‘pans’ to collect salt. Salt mining has gone on here for centuries, and was once the main source of salt for the whole country. There are around 15,000 ‘salt pans’, and they produce an average of 10 tonnes of salt on a good day.
