Wally Funk will be going to space 60 years after passing her astronaut tests, joining billionaire Jeff Bezos, his brother Mark and the anonymous bidder who won the seat for $28 million later this month.
She was the topper of the Mercury 13 programme, which consisted of women who underwent the same fitness tests as NASA’s first male astronauts, but was not allowed into the space program because of her gender.
But that did not discourage her from a trailblazing career in aviation. Funk became a pilot, and the first female Federal Aviation Administration inspector.
Over the course of many years, she applied to NASA’s astronaut corps four times but by then, candidates needed to have a degree in engineering, and Funk didn’t have one.
At 82, she will be the oldest person to ever fly into space, fulfilling her lifelong dream on Blue Origin’s first crewed flight.
