economic inequality

The first thing I notice in the picture is that one person is taller than the other. I think the story that it is telling is that those who are able to afford the appropriate books already have a higher up than those who can’t. It’s not the person’s fault that the school demands these specific books and other studying materials. This frustrated me because I remember in high school that the lists of things that we needed were specific brands of things as simple as pencils. Most of the time they were overpriced and we didn’t use the majority of the things on the list. While some people weren’t always able to afford all the school supplies and therefore they had to depend on others to get them a notebook and a pencil or even a water bottle. Some teachers were fortunate enough to give people notebooks that they could use for the rest of the year but that wasn’t always the case for everyone else. This happens because there is an unequal distribution of resources in school systems, while there are bursaries for college and university there aren’t any for elementary and high school. This is why they should create smaller bursaries to help high school students with buying their books and supplies. I hope that this photo gives a proper visual representation of the structural violence that occurs in the education system.
