Entrance to the Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Lisbon
These are the front doors of the Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and its church in Lisbon, Portugal which is a former Catholic convent located in the civil parish of Santa Maria Maior.
The medieval convent was ruined during the sequence of the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and the destroyed Gothic Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the southern facade of the convent is the main trace of the great earthquake still visible in the old city.
At the time of the earthquake, it was the largest church in Lisbon, but today the roofless nave open to the sky is all that remains of the arches and rubble that caved in on the congregation as they were attending mass.
