Through the Bridge

After waking up in the morning, the first thing I saw on my phone was a message from two hours prior saying UP 1111 had passed Colfax leading MROMI. I immediately got ready to leave, and as I was getting ready to head out the door I got word that the train was just getting into Roseville. Making my way into downtown Sacramento, I waited, and waited, and waited for a few hours before it finally showed up.

I found out the train was taking forever as MOW was holding everything up near Elvas, only a few miles to the east of where I was set up. Recently, this has caused backups all over NorCal, with MOW working on just about every line that runs in or near the Sacramento region. These blockages cause trains to be halted for hours at a time while MOW does necessary work to keep the lines in good condition.

After about two hours of sitting, 1111's train was back on the move. I had a highway camera at Elvas pulled up to see when it passed, and since it was pouring rain I wasn't going to get out of my car until I had visuals. When it did pass by the camera, I hopped out of the car and walked to my spot. Only a few minutes went by before it rounded the corner, and the overcast lighting canceled out the annoying conditions between light spots and harsh shadows the bridge usually challenges photographers with. I then planned to catch the train at Davis, but after checking the traffic to see a crash happened on the causeway and there was construction, I dropped that idea fast.
