Shop Switcher

UP's J.R. Davis Yard in Roseville, CA hosts a shop complex where units from all over the west come to get heavy repairs done. Due to this, it is not uncommon to see locomotives moving in, out, and around the shops all through the day and night.

On this evening, the shop switcher was UP 6902, an AC4460CW. This unit is typically not seen running around by itself, as if you look closely, there is a clear lack of PTC. At the time, this was a common thing to see on the 6800 and 6900 series AC4460s, so to see it running around with a crew in the cab was a treat even though it wasn't on the road.

As a crew member gets off of the unit, the smoky, evening golden light is illuminating the train. After eventually getting back on the unit, the locomotive would roll forward to grab a couple other motors before sending them to another shop bay. I'm glad to have captured this when I did, as in 2023 the remaining AC4460s were rebuilt into C44ACMs, and with the addition of a whole new front. The 6902 was one of the first to go, coming out of Wabtec's Fort Worth facility in March of 2023 with a new paint scheme and rebuilt.
