War Memorial, Blackhall, Durham
The Blackhall War Memorial is located in Welfare Park, Blackhall Colliery, County Durham. It was unveiled on April 19, 1952, by E. Shinwell MP and dedicated by Revd. E.D.A. Staunton, Assistant Chaplain, General Northern Command. The memorial commemorates 13 local servicemen who died in World War I, 48 servicemen and women who died in World War II, eight civilian casualties of air raids, and one soldier who died in the Korean War.
The memorial features a Latin cross set on a tapering plinth and square base, with steps leading up to it. The dedication and names of the fallen are inscribed on the faces of the plinth. In 2011, a new plaque was added to honour those who have died in more recent conflicts. The memorial is Grade II listed on the National Heritage List for England.
