Hetton Lyons Country Park, Hetton-le-Hole, Durham

Hetton Lyons Country Park, located in Hetton le Hole, Tyne and Wear, is a picturesque park with a rich history and a variety of recreational activities. The park features a large lake, wildlife, and fine views, making it a popular spot for visitors. It was named after John Lyon, the great-great-great-grandfather of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, mother of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

 

The park was once a rich mining area, and its transformation into a country park involved significant reclamation efforts. Today, it offers a range of activities, including walking, cycling, fishing, and water sports. The park is also home to various clubs and organizations, such as the Hawks Cycling Club, Roker Canoe Club, and Ryton Triathlon Club.

 

One notable feature of the park is the Greenheart (Tree) installation by artist William Pym, which represents the area's industrial heritage and regeneration. The park also hosts events and activities throughout the year, including the Transplant Games, the World Cyclo Cross Championships, and the Annual Dragonboat Race.
