#4 at Winslow
While on vacation in Arizona, I woke up very early one morning so that I could railfan for a couple hours in the morning. I originally wanted to railfan around Flagstaff since that was closer to where I was staying, but I also wanted to shoot Amtrak, which was a problem. Amtrak (when running on time) always gets through Flagstaff before sunrise, even in the summertime. However, I did the math and figured if he was running on time, I could beat him to Winslow and catch him coming into town from the famous overpass on the west side of town. So, I left at 3:15am local time and headed north and then east to get to Winslow at sunrise.
Amtrak was following closely behind this H-BARKCK as it was nearing Winslow. There was a bit of a traffic jam at Winslow, which caused a few minutes delay for Amtrak coming into town. After the delay, this BARKCK got the clear to come into Winslow while Amtrak was to cross over and get onto the south main to overtake the BARKCK and come into town.
I quickly realized I was screwed with Amtrak crossing over to pass the manifest. I figured for sure my view would be blocked by the manifest as Amtrak rolled by. That was almost the case, but the manifest slowed down just enough to where I could get the shot of #4. However, I had to run up to the fence and position myself more over the top of the trains instead of where I was previously which was just on the north side of the fence on the overpass.
I'm still not entirely happy with how this shot turned out. But then again, I was rushed into a last second decision, so what can you really do? I do think it is a neat view that not many people have. I have very seldom seen pictures of Amtrak in the early morning coming into Winslow, and especially not having a meet like this.
