Helping my Friend Get the Pokemon Card
Both of my roommate and I are Pokemon fans and every week we buy Pokemon card packs and see what we can get. The collection is a huge hobby for us and we enjoy when we fill the binder with cards we like. It is 25th Anniversary for Pokemon this year and the Nintendo Company published new packs. My roommate got some packs from Target, but I did not. I helped him open packs and get him a Charizard, which is the most valuable card can be gotten from the pack. This create a huge desire for me of buying card box and trying getting the card. I think this desire is caused by herd mentality or even envy, like "I want the valuable things that people around me have". I do not believe this desire is good. It will let me waste money and make me uncomfortable when I don't get what I want. This kind of desire need to be manipulated. On the other side, I don't think trading card doesn't just bring me bad effect. It also creates a connection between its collectors and players and gives people a chance to talk with others who have the similar interests with them and give them a desire of belonging. I believe it's like what I learnt from the desire project. The company never create desire with those cards, but they do attract the consumer with genuine personal desire and get people deeper in it.
My enthusiasm on trade card appears after I come to the United States. Similar to what drive me to join the CSSS, playing card games can give me the feeling of belonging. When I played card games with my friends, no one will care my accent and where I from. The only thing we focused on is the game. This feeling create the desire and the first motivation of buying cards. With the desire of "having the cards" and belonging, I may continue to collect and play cards with my friends. However, after learning about desire in the class, I understand how company attracts people's desire. I need to control my desire is important to my life and I will buy cards in moderation since I have spent lots of money on it.
