Beware the Ides of March or A True Texas Native
I grew up watching the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and I loved how each episode had two titles. I thought that would be a good idea for this photograph.
This is Aphonopelma hentzi, the Texas brown tarantula. I saw her while hiking to the Devils Hall in Guadalupe Mountains National Park. As everyone has already heard, although she looks scary, she is relatively harmless.
Even though I know this, I confess that I get a little shiver every time I come across one.
Why do I call it a she? Probability is why. Females may live as long as 40 years but no one really knows. Males are lucky to live past one year.
So, ignore the shiver and enjoy your Ides, unless of course, you are the Roman Emperor or a male tarantula - the clock is running on both of you...
