Outside Looking In

Memories… remembering the people who once were. Where are they now? Inside, a magnificent old staircase and banister leads up to the second and third floors of the old hotel that in its later years served as a residence for the down and out, the addicted, small time prostitutes, and even an old shell shocked war veteran who never cut his hair or shaved and who never ever spoke a word, his eyes forever fixed in a straight ahead stare. On the wall the old cigarette smoke stained murals that were once bright and cheerful continue their slow descent into oblivion to remind us of the passage of time and the sure deterioration that is it’s workmanship. Where are they now those unfortunate folks who due to unfavorable circumstances lived out their lives here in the humiliation of poverty and despair? The city…the gathering place of proud hopes contrasted with utter desolation. Who can know it? Who can fathom its incredible contrasts? Even the cockroaches are gone, no longer an inconvenience to their human hosts. Such is the fate of this once popular city hotel, the Julien.
