inside "king agamemnon's tomb" ...
the triangular opening is to spread the dome weight and protect the entrance lintel (just seen at bottom edge of photo) of this "beehive" tomb aka tholos
a stone built dome of considerable size with impressive entrance, it was discovered and partly excavated by heinrich schliemann in the 1870s, the agamemnon connection seems to date from this time ...
whether this tomb was ever used is unclear, when excavated by schliemann there were no reported finds
nb. the mycenaean civilization spanned over 500yrs, there were finds in graves nearby
constructed circa 1300 - 1250bc - as per wikipedia
mycenae, peloponnese greece
my second visit and look inside this perfect dome - and 50 years on, I'm still amazed by the quality of work done by the masons in dressing so many stones
the achievements of all these early civilisations, wherever they were in the world are absolutely incredible
