En route vers l'Etna / On the road to Etna
L'Etna, le volcan sicilien aux mille ravages, est aussi une source abondante de mythes et légendes. L'un de ces mythes raconte que Héphaïstos, après avoir été chassé du mont Olympe suite à une mauvaise dispute avec Jupiter, serait tombé sur la Sicile créant un trou profond dans la montagne. Il aurait ensuite décidé d’utiliser cette montagne comme forge, explication des étincelles de feu lors des éruptions de l'Etna. Il y a aussi l’histoire du berger Acis amoureux de la nymphe marine Galatée convoitée par le cyclope Polyphème. Celui-ci, pour avoir la Néréide à lui seul, tue Acis en lui lançant d’énormes rochers. Polyphème est l’Etna, son œil unique représente la lueur rougeoyante du cratère qui lance d’énormes pierres dangereuses au ciel.
Etna, the Sicilian volcano of a thousand ravages, is also a rich source of myths and legends. One of these myths recounts that Hephaestus, after being driven from Mount Olympus following a quarrel with Jupiter, fell on Sicily, creating a deep hole in the mountain. He then decided to use this mountain as a forge, explaining the sparks of fire when Etna erupts. There's also the story of the shepherd Acis, in love with the sea nymph Galatea, coveted by the Cyclops Polyphemus. To have the Nereid all to himself, Polyphemus kills Acis by hurling huge boulders at him. Polyphemus is Etna, his single eye representing the glowing red glow of the crater that hurls huge, dangerous stones into the sky.
