A Reading of the Song Lyrics for “Let It Be” by The Beatles. A request from friend and follower Steven Carter.
Well, this request from my friend Steve threw down the gauntlet for sure. How on earth does one read out such a song that is so iconic?
I thought about it a lot, and the way life events that got in the way delayed this request somewhat.
I read it, and I listened to it many times. It was going around in my head after a while and wouldn’t leave. What was it about? I read some background information about why Paul McCartney wrote it in the first place, as I had heard him talk about it and its meaning.
Many people think that it is about faith, and Paul has said that in actual fact it was not about that specifically, but he was quite happy if people found comfort in it in that way. What had happened was that he had a dream about his own mother, at a time when he was quite stressed out and thinking about all sorts of things that needed to be done when The Beatles were early on in their career. You could say that certain responsibilities were perhaps beginning to weigh a bit heavy.
In his dream his mother came to him and told him to just…”let it be”. In other words, stop stressing about it and it will sort itself out, as things often do, despite what we try and do to hurry things along.
Once I had taken this on board I started to understand the meanings behind the song a lot more. It can be applied to our own individual lives, but also to the wider world and its concerns.
After all, how many of us wish that things would just ‘stop’ right now? In our own times we are facing some watershed moments, and those hell-bent on destruction would do well to just…stop…and let it be.
And personally…I knew that to be able to read this out and do it justice I had to ‘feel’ it. I left it for a little while, and then some events happened to me that caused me to be very stressed out indeed. Some of you know about a particular event that upset me quite a lot, involving a two foot metal bar being thrown over my back wall into my garden, by a neighbour who was…unbelievably stupid.
What he didn’t know in his zeal and careless clearing of his garden was that I was the other side of the tall garden wall when he threw it. It came down and missed me by a few centimetres. I was bending over weeding at the time, when it went past my head and landed in the ground, upright, moving my hair as it went by.
Lets just say he was quite surprised when he found out I was the other side of the wall…
Later…and I am not going to lie here, I went into a bit of shock. I was unwell for a few days, and then it took me a few weeks to find some sort of equilibrium again. All sorts of things were going through my head, not least the fact that I have responsibilities of my own, and another person would suffer if I wasn’t here but lets not dwell on those. But the thing was that this is the sixth event in my life whereby I might have been no more, so I began to wonder if I was like a cat, running out of those fabled nine lives…
The thing is, when I listened to this song again…I felt it in my bones this time. I thought…well, yes, I could have died, but I didn’t, I am here. Why is that? The only sensible thing you can come up with is that is wasn’t my time to go. So while we are here…we have to make it count, and try and enjoy what we have, and thank those Angels who look after us.
Let it be.
So I read the lyrics out with a new understanding, and what you hear on this video is the result. I hope you like it, and Steve, my apologies for taking so long, but maybe it is better for that.
My blessings and love to all.
