I Wanted To Believe
I wanted to believe
That I would be able to leave here
But I find I still remain
Trapped somehow on this hill
I feel as though I might have
Swallowed a bitter pill
Or struck a bargain
That only had a one way ticket
Straight to some sort of hell
Or permanent purgatory
How is it I can be here in the day
Don’t ghosts prefer the dusk
Deeper colours of grey
The shade of hiding away
I flit from grave to grave
Peer out from the edges
Keeping out of view
Did you say you would be here
When are you coming back
I wanted to believe you

Despite the brilliant sun and blue sky on this day when I was visiting Glynde Church in Sussex in the UK with my camera, when I came round to the north side of the building and looked back down towards the entrance of the churchyard, I was aware of a chill in the air, a certain tension.
It seems that no matter how many times I visit this Church I am always having different experiences here, and I find that not only does it inspire me, it speaks to me deeply.
This work is the result of those feelings that I had that day.
I have paired this work with U2’s ‘The Little Things That Give You Away’ from their newly released ‘Songs of Surrender’ album. Bono’s haunting voice perfectly matches the feelings I am trying to convey in this work.
