Avalon
Avalon is the home of visions
Of everything sacred, precious and fine
A place where we can journey
Escape to in our difficult lives
But what if for a moment it was real
And suddenly you were offered a glimpse
It would haunt you for evermore
You would keep chasing that bliss
What are you searching for
What is it that you have missed
Something always elusive
Something always hidden in the mist
Home of the wounded
Sanctuary of the blessed
A reliquary for lost treasure
Some of it sent with a kiss
Would we find our answers
Would we find some peace
Get to ask our questions
In the Halls of Kings
It can turn into a kind of madness
But we love our Holy Fools
They live in a kind of irreverence
They don’t follow any rules
But thank God for those who still dream
Thank God for those who still hang on
For a love that might otherwise be lost
Believing in the land of Avalon

Sometimes the words and image go to together so perfectly I just feel like a bystander. But of course, neither would happen if I was not there at this location taking the image, having carefully wrapped my Grail up carefully and placed it in my camera bag with my lenses. I like to leave the camera out as much as possible, sitting on the car seat beside me as I drive to where I want to go, in this case, Glynde Church in Sussex, UK. This cup in my collection is known as the Glastonbury Cup, and I have had it for some years now.
The light this Autumn day was incredibly soft and mellow, warm as a summer’s evening. And as soon as I placed the cup in the last rays of the sun as it set for the afternoon, an enchantment seemed to settle over this beautiful place and the cup.
As I stood there in this sacred place with the Glastonbury Cup looking so ethereal in the light I thought of Avalon, that land of the otherworld, where Kings rest, waiting to be called again to answer their country’s need.
I have paired this work with Bryan Ferry’s ‘Avalon’, after all, what else could I do?
