Vespers
He always feels a welcome
As he passes through the door
Because for the Heart
He would always do more
He understands the need
Of structure and regulation
Because for the Heart
He would always do more
He yearns for the calm and peace
His prayers ask for
Because for the Heart
He would always do more
He lives for total communion
A soul returning home
Because for the Heart
He would always do more
His tears fall in recognition
Of final judgement
Because for the Heart
He would always do more

A monk goes into the church to pray at 6 pm….
When I looked at the time after taking this shot I saw that it was not long after 6.00pm in the evening, and as this church was connected to Wilmington Priory in the past, although the priory is now in ruins, this church and surrounding area still has an echoing atmosphere, as if it is remembering past rituals and long ago prayers.
The words started to come as I was there, and I scribbled them down in my notebook that I carry around in my camera bag just for this purpose.
Later on when I looked at this image, I refined the poem, and I felt that perhaps it was in memory of a monk who attended Vespers, one late summer September evening in the past.
Wilmington Church, East Sussex, UK.
I have paired this work with Enya’s ‘So I Could Find My Way’, feeling that she had caught the reflective and gentle mood that I was feeling that day as I took the above image.
