Stay
Please stay with me
Just a little bit longer
Stay with me
Don’t go this way
What would I do without you
Don’t break my heart this way
It’s never the right time
The heart doesn’t prepare
Just in case
Don’t let them collect you
From this place
Can we outrun the shadows
That even angels make
In the broad light of day
They bring the chill of night
And gentle pity in their eyes
We need a stay of execution
Just some extra delay
What would be the price
We would have to pay
Before the deep long night
Claimed your spirit
And stole you away

When I was recovering from the worst of Covid, and reflecting on the way it had threatened my partner’s life, I was wondering how on earth I was going to put into words what I felt, poetically. For a while there nothing would come, but then as I was listening to the music of U2, and in this case, also watching the video with it, which has become a classic, I was filled with inspiration.
The image I was thinking of using matched the emotive feel of the song and film. I was so struck by it the words just flowed out. And this is the result.
The image was taken at Glynde Church, in East Sussex, UK. There was something about this image that suggested something was going on ‘off camera’ so to speak. Very emotive, as if some ‘people’ were going to appear in the image from the left side…..
As this is a homage to U2, and a thank you, here is the link to that particular song ‘Stay’ and the video.
