Inaugurated in 1976, the Wolfe Islander III is shown here in a recent winter wind storm in rough sea; not the worse conditions it has experienced over the past 48 years, but nonetheless illustrating the challenging weather it and its experienced crew must occasionally face and endure to maintain the 5 km “soft” navigational link between Kinston and Wolfe Island, Ontario. The first few images were pulled from as recent video published in the same Flickr album and showing the ferry operating in stormy weather.
A few days later and in much calmer circumstances, the aging vessel had a sort of Meet & Greet event near the Kingston dock with the next-generation full-electric propulsion ferry, named Wolfe Islander IV with its crew undergoing mandated practical training. The new, larger capacity ship (75-cars vs 54-cars) is also seen on its own around the Kingston Harbour distinguished by its modern streamlined-looking curve shapes.
