BNSF Barstow, CA

To gain access to California and the Pacific, Santa Fe predecessor Atlantic and Pacific Railroad purchased a route from The Needles to Mojave just completed by Southern Pacific. An extension from San Bernardino north through Cajon Pass was built to provide access to Southern California and intersect the former Southern Pacific in the high desert at Waterman Junction. Once under control by the A&P that location was quickly renamed Barstow after the current president of the Santa Fe, William Barstow Strong.

Barstow’s name adorns the stone facade of the the 1911 Spanish Renaissance Casa Del Desierto (House of the Desert) Santa Fe Station and Harvey House to this day. Red clay barrel roof tiles give some relief inside from the heat of the constant desert sun.
