How to Correctly Pronounce Your Name in Google Assistant

Google is going to update Google Assistant with enhanced contextual learning capabilities that should improve the accuracy of the digital assistant. Among the changes is the willingness for Google Assistant to learn how to effectively pronounce names—after a brief period of self-taught voice training.

Previously, Google Assistant would speak your favored nickname solely on the basis of its spelling. If it is unable to pronounce your name correctly, you can assist it by spelling it phonetically in the Assistant's settings. However, you now can learn it to tell your name directly by speaking to it. This is how:

To activate Google Assistant, say "Hey Google" or click the Google Assistant icon on your device, then tap the Settings button in the bottom menu. (Alternatively, you can access this menu via Android's settings, which are located at Settings > Apps & notifications > Assistant > See all Assistant Settings.)

Scroll to the bottom and tap "Basic Info," then "Nickname."

To hear Google Assistant's current pronunciation, tap "Play."

To replace it with your own voice, choose "Record your own."

Select "Record" and then speak your name aloud. After you finish speaking, Google Assistant will stop recording and save what you said. It will then respond to you by saying your name aloud.

You can now exit the settings if you are satisfied with the pronunciation. If something is incorrect, tap "Record" to attempt again.
