Government Accountability Office

"The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is an independent agency of the government of the United States. It is responsible for providing auditing and investigative services to the Congress and is often referred to as the ""congressional watchdog."" The GAO investigates how taxpayer money is spent studies federal policies and programs and issues recommendations for improving the performance and integrity of the federal government. It helps to ensure government accountability by conducting audits and investigations of government departments bodies and organizations. It also provides independent advisory services on issues such as budgeting procurement and program evaluation. The GAO is composed of an Inspector General and three auditing divisions."
