There are two types of dysmenorrhoea:

1. Primary dysmenorrhoea is menstrual pain that is not caused by other diseases. There is no other cause for menstruation. The cause is too much prostaglandin in the body. These are chemicals that cause your uterine muscles to tense and relax, which in turn causes cramps.

The pain usually lasts a few days, but in some women it can last longer.

2. Secondary dysmenorrhoea is caused by diseases of your reproductive organs, such as endometriosis and fibroids in the uterus. The pain of secondary dysmenorrhoea can last a long time and can become severe.

To help relieve your menstrual pain,

1. try using a heating pad on your abdomen

2. Exercises

3. Hot showers

4. Relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation

Getting enough rest and avoiding alcohol and tobacco can also help. Ask Doctor Online for information about menstrual pain.
