Jeppey Nimmo's Hat Trick

The famous milliner, Madass a-Hadder, created this autumnal hat for Buffingtons, the Canadian fashion house. At the time, the fortunes of Buffingtons were in steep decline. An ill-advised foray into transparent miniskirts in the winter of '92 (in direct opposition to the theory of skirt length inverting the state of the economy) had resulted in precipitously falling sales.

At huge expense, then, they called upon the services of a-Hadder to create a unique and, they hoped, a very sellable look - this is what he came up with. Featured in the Toledo Evening News, Buffingtons' annual profits were doubled almost overnight when a number (never revealed) of the hats were sold.

Modelled by Jeppey Nimmo (later a-Hadder's personal assistant), the picture caught the season just as Buffingtons had hoped.

A year later, a grateful Buffingtons invited a-Hadder to take part in their prestigious Annual Hatboxing Championship; an invitation he gladly declined.
