Grisola Emmerson singing the blues in 1968 at the Broken Wheel Club
Known for her astonishing range, songs like "In my Ear", "Sock it to me" and "Bedtime Mambo" were to become ever entwined with her name. At an early age, Emmerson was singing the blues; she said later that "in a world where, frankly, we never had any money worries, and we always knew where the next buck was coming from, it was refreshing to go to local clubs and submerge myself in a world of pain, guilt, agony and regret. I also took up singing the blues".
This performance, probably the peak of her career, took place at The Broken Wheel Club in Wamalama, where they were presenting the 1968 Big Wamalama Singsong. Afterwards, the stage was mobbed by adoring fans, but fortunately for Emmerson she wasn't on it. A close call indeed!
Today, at the age of 97, Emmerson still remembers her days as one of the most powerful voices in the business - a fact independently confirmed by ENT magazine in their 1970 article "Extreme Audiology and How To Cope With It.".
