Project On Appearance
This is an unfinished final piece I developed on the theme of appearance, specifically demonstrating how clothes have zero value in a persons and that who they are is the most important quality, demonstrated by the clothes being drawn with line art and using intricate detail on the person. For this project I used myself on the model, due to my own struggles with appearance and stereotypes, I’m aware my style is viewed as ‘alternative’ by other people and I’m judged due to what over people’s see. So I developed a three tiers of revolving boxes, inspired by dress up games where you could change the clothes of your character, highlighting how naturalistic and childish viewing someone on their clothing is and how we are made up of different stereotypes, each side showing a different views of myself. The yellow side represents me in comfortable clothes, usually seen by my family and friends. Blue represents hyper masculinity, , wearing a typical muscle t-shirt and SnapBack, an extreme stereotype on gendered clothing which I wanted to focus on as I myself do not care for clothing to be gendered and wear clothes from both the men’s and females section.. Purple was what I usually wear, what people see of me most and how I choose to represent myself. And pink represents a hyper feminine stereotype, wearing a dress which I myself am uncomfortable with however people see me as feminine based on stereotype.
I had so much fun looking into what I valued myself in my appearance whilst doing all these self portraits as well as working on a life-sized scale which played to the humour of this being like a dress up game that people could interact with. Furthermore making the actual structure was an amazing process to go through; going from designs and measurements to actually putting it together, working out how it would spin and how to balance the pole in the middle. It really put my problem solving to the test and I got to learn from so many people in the process of trial and error of helping make this.
