Era: Ancient Rome

History: Originating sometime in the 8th Century B.C. from a small town on the Tiber River, Rome grew to an Empire that stretched across continental Europe, northern Africa, the Mediterranean islands and much of western Asia. The Ancient Romans introduced numerous advances in many areas of society and culture which continue to this day.

Following the conquest and occupation of an enemy, the Romans encouraged the natives to develop towns modeled after the Roman way. With time, these provincial citizens adopted the Roman customs and clothing. The Romanization of provincial territories saw the development of villas by the wealthy citizens. These wealthy citizens attended games, and built bath houses to emulate their Roman conquerors and decorated their villas with paintings and mosaics. The richest of these provincials often became senators and attended the senate in Rome. Centuries of this Romanization, led to a diverse and multi-cultural Roman citizenry.
