Locomotive Spotting North West
Barrow Hill Delights
A good, solid lineup of locomotives outside Barrow Hill roundhouse, as viewed from the old coaling stage. From right to left, closest to farthest, we have:
Identity: 45060 Sherwood Forester
Class: BR Class 45/0
Livery: BR blue, full yellow ends
A long-term resident of Barrow Hill roundhouse, 45060 is the flagship of Pioneer Diesels. The locomotive is looking a little faded at the moment, but her future is bright - with 45105's overhaul inside the shed nearing completion, 45060 will hopefully soon get some much-needed repairs and be back in traffic over the next few years.
Identity: 27066
Class: BRCW Class 27/0
Livery: BR blue, full yellow ends
Owned by Harry Needle for almost a decade now, this locomotive was originally in operation condition but is now slowly undergoing overhaul as time and space allows.
Identity: 91117
Class: BREL Class 91/1
Livery: Europhoenix red, silver, and grey
One of my personal favourites with happy memories of West Riding Limited at York a decade ago, 91117 has now spent a long time stored, with plans to export the locomotive to Europe long since shelved. With sister 91120 undergoing a repaint at Crewe HC, likely into a heritage livery, perhaps 91117 will follow suit into preservation?
Identity: 82008
Class: Metro-Vick Class 82
Livery: Intercity Executive
Apparently long the red-headed stepchild of the AC Loco Group, 82008 has spent a lot of time in storage over the decades since withdrawal, with the Executive livery now long-since faded. Why this locomotive seems doomed to sit outside in the rain and the cold while the other AC Loco Group assets get a nice warm track inside the shelter of the roundhouse I'm not too sure. Note also that at some point somebody has unlatched the pantograph, which now stands at maximum extension.
Identity: 20304
Class: BR Class 20/3
Livery: DRS mid Compass
Identity: 20301
Class: BR Class 20/3
Livery: DRS mid Compass
Both of these locomotives form part of the fleet withdrawn by DRS at the end of 2020. They were among the five which ended up with HNRC, but their exact fate is up in the air - whether they end up back in service or simply stripped as spares donors like the recently-disappeared 20121 remains to be seen.
Identity: 46010
Class: BR Class 46/0
Livery: BR blue, full yellow ends
Formerly a resident at the Nottingham Heritage Transport Centre (ex-Great Central Railway North), this locomotive moved to Barrow Hill by road last year. Recently operational, whether it is at Barrow Hill for repairs or for a more permanent move remains to be seen.
Identity: 37409
Class: English Electric Class 37/4
Livery: BR revised blue 'large logo'
Another ex-DRS heritage fleet locomotive, 37409 (then named Lord Hinton) was operational until a minor failure in 2021 took her out of action. This made her a prime candidate for onward sale rather than repair, and the locomotive was picked up by the ever-expanding LSL in 2022. For now the locomotive is a member of the LSL active fleet, but has spent the past nine months stored at Barrow Hill, apparently waiting for several minor repairs.
Identity: D9000 Royal Scots Grey
Class: English Electric Class 55
Livery: BR two-tone green, yellow warning panels
A prime example of why you need to be careful with old machines. The first production Deltic, she underwent a major overhaul over the past several years, with the date of her maiden tour being pushed back several times. After all of that time and effort she succeeded in making it back to Crewe, but no further - all future bookings were cancelled and the locomotive was again withdrawn due to mechanical issues. It would now seem that LSL have given up wasting their own resources on this problem child, and the locomotive has now been delivered to Barrow Hill - I assume for the tender ministrations of the Deltic Preservation Society, once they've got their own 55009 Alycidon, 55015 Tulyar, and 55019 Royal Highland Fusilier back on the mainline, all three of which were also present that day.
